Dear Exhibitors:
When you are working the booth
at your next trade show, make sure you don't let Treats become Tricks.
As an example, the attendee who takes 30 minutes of your time may seem
like a treat, due to their interest, but you may have missed 10 other prospects
who represent much more business. As most attendees will wait less than
2 minutes to talk with booth staff, it is easy to miss them. And they don't
come back. Instead they meet with your competition on the next aisle.
Some solutions to help keep
your Treat from becoming a Trick:
1. Set an appointment to
meet with them later at the show . Then you give them the time necessary
while not losing any potential business.
2. Set an appointment for
the appropriate person (you or sales rep.) to meet them at their office
after the show. Follow up to make sure the appointment happened.
3. Hand them off to additional
staff, e.g. technical, who may be able to answer their questions more efficiently. |
Due to the current
lower attendance at trade shows, the Treat (buyer) density is higher. But
so is the potential for the these Treats to become Tricks. Manage your
time well and you can have all the Treats and no Tricks.

There may be no more grueling or
nerve racking task than traveling with your exhibit. Or worse yet, traveling
without your exhibit. Here's a few tips to make the task less daunting:
1. Always confirm your reservations before you leave--worry about the
show, not where you're going to stay.
2. If you have small last minute items going to the show (graphics,
premiums, etc.) bring them with you on the plane. Less cost, and less likely
to get lost.
3. If you're shipping small last minute items, ship them to your hotel
instead of the show floor. You won't get charged the drayage, and they're
less likely to get lost.
4. Try to book hotels within 3-4 miles of the convention center. The
cost may be a little more, but you'll appreciate saving the money on taxis,
and you're right down the street in case anything goes wrong while you're
not there.
5. Often times you can bring your smaller exhibits with you on the plane
(as checked baggage, of course). This is a great way to save some money.
Check with your airlines for weight limits or dimension restrictions. |

| There's one
truth that remains constant in all industries: some people are in it just
for the money. The trick (and you should know by now that there is always
a trick) is to know how to spot the difference between your friends and
your foes.
Here's some quick definitions:
friend-n.-someone who cares about your well being; someone
who is not ultimately persuaded by personal benefit.
foe-n.-someone whose motivation lies solely in personal
gain.
The quick friend vs. foe test:
1. There's a problem with the shipment of the booth. Your exhibit house:
a) calls the shipper immediately to find out what the problem is.
b) tells you that it's not their problem, take it up with your shipper.
2. You notice a chip on the corner of one of your counters. When you
ask your exhibit house to repair it, they:
a) repair it as soon as the booth returns, so it's ready to go out
for your next show.
b) tell you that they're waiting for more damages to occur to your
booth because they have a minimum charge for work done.
3. You buy a brand new modular booth, but you notice that the laminate
colors don't match on some of the panels. When you bring it to your exhibit
houses attention, they:
a) tell you that they are already aware of the problem and have been
in contact with the manufacturer to get the panels replaced.
b) tell you, "You get what you pay for." |
| If you answered "b" to any of these questions, your exhibit
house is not acting like your friend.
We all understand that the point of business is ultimately to make money,
but a successful business mantra should always be--Happy customers first,
Money second. The successful business understands that they are where they
are because of their customers and will work as hard as they can to keep
the friends they got. |
