No self-respecting pirate would throw his hard won booty overboard,
but many renegades of the trade show floor (exhibitors) do this routinely!
Aarrgh!!! They lose over half their treasure (show leads) by not following-up
(18%) or doing so too late (43%). Much of the remaining treasure is of
such little value, that salesmen would rather walk the plank than pick
up the phone and call.
To make sure you and your parrot don't have to walk the plank, plan
your next trade show like a successful pirate:
1. Make sure the prey has some treasure (Qualify Your Leads)
2. Plan your attack (Put a team and procedures in place)
3. Attack quickly and forcefully (Follow-up in 7 days or less)
4. Hold the second in command accountable ( Hold someone accountable)

| It just seems that no matter
where we go or what we do, we just can't get away from politics. This is
especially true if you live in California ; ). The sad but simple truth
is that they are everywhere, even in graphics. But maybe, just maybe we're
looking at this the wrong way. Perhaps we should just see politics as our
forefathers did--as a necessary order of operations (and ideals) to get
the best results for the largest majority. This is certainly a true statement
when it comes to designing and producing graphics.
When designing graphics, you
must keep the hierarchy of graphics in mind. The order should
come as follows:
1.
Who Are You?
2.
What Do You Do?
3.
What Can You Do For Me?
Now the list above is the
simplest order of importance. When designing graphics for a trade show
exhibit, you must remember that you have 3 seconds to catch someone's attention,
and 7 seconds to keep it. Anything beyond that is too much, and you'll
lose your prospect before you even start.
The same hierarchy that you
use to create your graphics should be used in the design of your trade
show exhibit as well. You want your name and logo to be easily spotted
on the trade show floor, so high towers and hanging signs are a good idea.
You also want your prospects to know who you are when they're standing
at your booth, so remember to have signage at eye level in the booth as
well. Also at eye level will be the graphics that you've produced for the
exhibit (of course using the hierarchy listed above). And in those graphics
(along with your product placement-if your company exhibits product) the
prospect will know what your company does. |

Lastly,
"What can you do for me?" This will be answered in three places: your graphics,
your hand-out literature, and your representatives.
One final thought on the subject:
make sure that your graphics are created with production in mind. The last
thing you want to do is have these beautiful graphics brainstormed and
created with not enough resolution to be produced at the size you want.
Rule of thumb is to create your graphics at 100dpi (dots per inch) at the
actual size you want it. So if you want a 30"x30" panel as your finished
product, create your file to be 30"x30" at 100dpi. This will usually require
that you use a graphics program since PowerPoint (and you know if you're
one of these people) only runs at 72dpi and does not allow you to resize
your frames.

graphics, but remember, effectiveness is the only thing that counts! |
