| Dear Exhibitors,
As I raced around the aisles
of the recent Exhibitor Show, hitting a few cones in the process, I saw
fabric murals, fabric signs, fabric walls and yes…more fabric. It seems
like everyone is using fabric in their exhibits. Why?
Fabric is aesthetically pleasing,
lightweight, large graphic capable and relatively easy to install. Starting
with lightweight overhead signs, the use of fabric now extends to the show
floor in the form of walls, dividers and graphic panels. With the high
costs of shipping and drayage, I look for more fabric, along with aluminum
extrusions to be a stable of exhibit building. When you can build a 20'
wall which weighs less than 50 lbs. and is covered with full-color graphics,
what is not to like!
Other items at Exhibitor included
show management and lead analysis software, various banner stands, static
and rotating, more lightweight counters and pedestals, and some very creative
design. These are some of the elements that when combined together will
help you start and finish the trade show race in first place. |

Dear Deegs, why can I set my exhibit up myself at some shows, but
at others, I am forced to hire labor?
Sheila, Baton Rouge, LA
Dear Sheila,
There are different reasons why you may be able to set your exhibit
up yourself in some shows but not in others. Here are a few:
1. Is the state that the show is in a "Right to Work" state? A RTW state
is a state that is not controlled by union labor. You can view a map that
shows which states are RTW here.
However, even though a state my be RTW, it can still depend on the venue
that is hosting the show as to whether or not you may be able to set up
your own exhibit. Many venues hold contracts with union labor companies
that will require you to use union labor during installation and dismantle
for insurance purposes. Most often, you will be required to use union labor
at formal exhibition halls, while hotel shows tend to be a little more
relaxed on this issue. |
|
2. How large is your exhibit, and how long
does it take to install? Generally, if your exhibit is a 10' or smaller,
and it takes one person less than 20 minutes to install, you should be
able to install it yourself. This does not include setting out your product
or demonstrations. Those can be done by your own personnel.
3. How did you get your exhibit to the show? Often, you may be able
to slide under the radar of the show foreman if you bring in your exhibit
yourself. If you ship your exhibit to the show and union labor brings your
exhibit to your booth space, chances are higher that they'll be keeping
an eye on you to see who installs your exhibit (especially if you're shipping
more than 2 small cases). When possible, bring in your own properties,
and you'll have a better chance of installing them yourself.
